TC-Optimist Club’s Environmental Education “Cabin Property”

CabinThe Optimist “Cabin Property” is located on a forty four acre parcel in the Hoosier Valley area, just south of Traverse City near Chums Corners.

The property was donated to the TC Optimist Club in several different parcels including the bulk of the property from Art and Mary Schmuckal, long term members and supporters of  the TC Optimist Club.

Our Steward Program Application is available for those who are interested in applying to help oversee use and maintenance of the cabin property

Purpose:

It serves as an Environmental Education Site for school and youth groups throughout Northwest Michigan. Many other organizations utilize the property for meetings and community support events as  well.

Setting:

The property is situated in the heart of natural surroundings, and includes heavily wooded areas as well as Beitner Creek and lowlands. It features the “Discovery Trail” a self-guided environmental education trail developed in conjunction with the Traverse City Area Schools. Day trips and overnight camping are welcome.

Facilities:

TC Optimist Cabin PropertyIncluded on the property is a rustic cabin that was the original Traverse City Visitors Center, a large covered pavilion with electricity and picnic tables, a hand pump well, porta-john, a large charcoal grill, a fire pit, and camping areas.

Opportunities are available for youth group participation in the improvement of the property and the development of educational materials.

Scout troupes have  used these opportunities to earn merit badges for their efforts to improve and maintain the Cabin Property surroundings.
